All Sundays of Advent

Collegeville • All are invited to join the St. John’s Monastic Community for the Advent Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. and Sunday evening prayer at 5 p.m. in the Abbey Church.

Little Falls • All are invited to attend the Advent liturgy at 8:30 a.m. with the Franciscan Sisters in Sacred Heart Chapel, St. Francis Convent.

Onamia • All are invited to attend Solemn Advent Vespers with the Crosier Fathers and Brothers at 5 p.m. in Holy Cross Priory Church.

St. Cloud • All are invited to Advent Vespers at 4 p.m. at St. Mary’s Cathedral. A part of the Liturgy of the Hours, Vespers is the Evening Prayer of the church consisting of psalms, canticles, prayers and silence.

St. Joseph • All are invited to attend the Advent liturgy at 10:30 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Monastery. The Benedictine community and public will assemble in the Gathering Place to light the Advent candles followed by a procession into Sacred Heart Chapel prior to the beginning of Mass.

Tuesday, December 1, through Saturday, December 19

St. Joseph • Spirituality Center at St. Benedict’s Monastery extends an invitation to prepare for Christmas by spending time in a personal retreat at the monastery. Wednesday, December 2

St. Joseph • Spirituality Center at St. Benedict’s Monastery offers “One-Day Silent Retreat” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Spend an Advent day in quiet reflection. Beginning with a brief opening session, participants will spend the rest of the day in quiet, ending with a closing prayer together. Some guided reflection will be provided. Fee: $20. Friday, December 4, through Sunday, December 6

St. Joseph • Spirituality Center at St. Benedict’s Monastery offers a “Centering Prayer Retreat” starting Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. through Dec. 6 at 1 p.m. This silent retreat offers an opportunity for those practicing centering prayer regularly to prepare for Advent in the peaceful surrounding of the monastery. The retreat includes an opening presentation, five centering prayers sessions and video segments by Thomas Keating and others, followed by optional discussion times. (Early Bird Fee by Nov. 24: $140. After Nov. 24: $155. Includes meals and lodging.)

Saturday, December 5

Little Falls • Franciscan Sisters extend an invitation to participate in “Advent — Who are we preparing for? Encountering Jesus with St. Bonaventure,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in St. Francis Hall at St. Francis Convent. Presenter Shawn Colberg, assistant professor of theology at St. John’s University, will use St. Bonaventure’s words and imagination to ponder the mystery of Jesus as the Word of God come to dwell among us. Sunday, December 6

Onamia • Community choir concert begins at 3 p.m. at Holy Cross Priory Church. Area musicians present joyful music in anticipation of the Christmas holidays. Free will offering.

St. Cloud • Holy Spirit Parish presents free Advent concert titled “Peace on Earth” at 11 a.m. The concert includes songs, carols and readings with The Holy Spirit Adult Choir and the Spirit Rings On Handbell Choir performing. (Mass celebrated at 9:30 a.m.)

Tuesday, December 8

St. Joseph • Spirituality Center at St. Benedict’s Monastery offers “The Lion and the Lamb: An Advent Reflection on Finding Hope and Peace in a Troubled World” from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Rule of Benedict urges us to “Seek peace and pursue it.” But how can people of good will obey that Gospel command in times like ours, when trouble invades our world, our nation, our neighborhoods, schools and families and our own hearts? Participants will wrestle with that pressing question with the help of music, short readings and film, share silence, conversation and a meal, and pray Noon Prayer with the monastic community. Collegeville • St. John’s Abbey hosts Advent retreat titled “Living into the Mystery of the Incarnation,” led by Benedictine Abbot John Klassen. Retreat starts with dinner on Friday at 5:30 p.m. and concludes after lunch on Sunday at 1 p.m. Some questions that will guide the retreat reflections are: “What is hope? Why does it matter that God took flesh in Jesus Christ? What are the implications of this great mystery?
