Advent Toy Contest raises awareness, funds

Categories: Around the Diocese

The St. Cloud Mission Office, with the Knights of Columbus, a Knights Auxiliary and other donors, is sponsoring the second annual Advent Toy Contest.
Catholic school children are encouraged to create a homemade toy or game using only reused, recycled or common items from around the house or classroom (such as rubber bands, old ribbon, jars, newspaper, cloth or boxes).

“We believe it is important to recognize that while many of our young people … are putting together Christmas lists, there are those in our world who don’t have the luxury of Christmas lists,” said a letter from the Mission Office announcing the contest.

“Without expendable money to buy toys, most children in developing nations have very simple toys, or make games out of items they find around home or in the community,” it said. “In an effort to think about and pray for those children around the world who don’t have ‘fancy’ toys or games to play with this Advent, who will not receive new toys or video games this Christmas, we invite our Catholic school children to make toys in these coming weeks.”

Each Catholic school will select up to three top inventions created by students and send them to the Mission Office by Dec. 19. A selection committee will name the top three toys diocesan-wide, and cash prizes will be awarded to the submitting schools. Winners will be announced shortly after Jan. 1.
