Bishop Kettler

Bishop Donald Kettler

Bishop Donald Kettler will be attending several papal events during Pope Francis’ visit to the U.S.

After a stop in Philadelphia at the World Meeting of Families, Bishop Kettler will join other bishops from around the country Sept. 23 in Washington, D.C., for midday prayer with the pope at St. Matthew’s Cathedral and later for the Mass and canonization of Blessed Junipero Serra at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

Bishop Kettler also will attend the pope’s address to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress on Sept. 24. (Father Timothy Wenzel, a retired priest of the Diocese of St. Cloud, also will attend the pope’s congressional address.)

Then, Bishop Kettler heads back to Philadelphia to join pilgrims from the St. Cloud Diocese at the World Meeting of Families, the accompanying Festival of Families and the concluding papal Mass on Sept. 27.

As people in the diocese follow the pope’s trip, Bishop Kettler hopes the excitement it generates won’t be lost when it concludes.

“My hope is that there will be follow-up so the enthusiasm doesn’t go away,” the bishop said. “I hope our religious ed programs and our adult education programs find ways to keep what he says and does with us as we live out our faith here at home.”
