Bishop Kinney appoints familiar face to be next diocesan chancellor

Benedictine Sister Nancy Bauer, former prioress of St. Benedict’s Monastery in St. Joseph, has been appointed chancellor of the Diocese of St. Cloud.

Bishop John Kinney made the appointment, which is effective Oct. 1.

Sister Nancy, 60, replaces Catherine (Cate) Coghlan, who is retiring Sept. 30.

Sister Nancy, who served as her community’s prioress from 2005-2011, is no stranger to the diocese or to readers of The Visitor.

For 20 years she worked as photographer, reporter and eventually editor of the diocese’s newspaper, and for two years she served as vice chancellor of the diocese.

A native of Miesville, Minn., she made her monastic profession in 1978.

Along with a degree in photo journalism from the University of Minnesota, she holds a master’s degree in theology from St. John’s School of Theology and a doctorate in church law from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
