Gabriel Walz, 28, was ordained a transitional deacon June 7 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. His ordination moves him a step closer to the priesthood, which he anticipates in June 2015.

During the summer he will serve as a deacon in a parish in the diocese, and may preach, minister, baptize, assist at Masses, witness marriages, officiate at funerals and lead prayer services. Walz’ home parish is Mary of the Immaculate Conception Parish in Rockville; he will return to St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul for his final year.

Ralph and Jean Walz of Rockville escort their son Gabriel down the aisle of St. Mary’s Cathedral June 7 for his ordination as a transitional deacon.

Walz acknowledges his family and friends who came to show their support.

Deacon Bill Ritche welcomes Deacon Walz with a greeting of peace.

Walz kneels before Bishop Donald Kettler and joins his hands for the promise of obedience during the ordination rite.
