New rector for St. Mary’s Cathedral among new priest appointments

Father Scott Pogatchnik has been appointed as the new rector of St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud, effective July 1, according to a list of official appointments released by the chancery May 28.

Father Pogatchnik also will serve as pastor of St. Augustine Parish in St. Cloud while continuing as the diocesan director of vocations.

Father Tony Oelrich, who has been serving as cathedral rector and pastor of St. Augustine and Christ Church Newman Center in St. Cloud, will continue as pastor of the Newman Center.

In other notable appointments, all effective July 1:

  • Father Laurn Virnig, who was ordained to the priesthood in 1963, will retire from active ministry. He has been serving as pastor of the parishes of Holy Cross in North Prairie and Holy Trinity in Royalton.
  • Father John Knopik receives his first assignment as a pastor at the parishes of St. Mary in Chokio and Ave Maria in Wheaton. He has served as parochial vicar at the parishes of SS. Peter and Paul in Braham, Christ the King in Cambridge and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Isanti.
  • Following a medical leave of absence, Father Jerome Nordick will become chaplain for the Poor Clare Sisters in Sauk Rapids.
  • Father Peter Kirchner will serve as pastor of the parishes of St. Francis de Sales in Belgrade, St. Donatus in Brooten and SS. Peter and Paul in Elrosa — parishes previously served by Father Mark Ostendorf, who died April 3.
  • Deacon Gabriel Walz, who will be ordained June 20 as a priest of the diocese, will serve as parochial vicar of the parishes of SS. Peter and Paul in Braham, Christ the King in Cambridge and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Isanti.
